Gooners...Gunners...etc + 60th Anniversary of end of WWII

these are the nicknames for the London Arsenal FC.

Arsenal FC vs Newcastle FC @ Highbury, London

Last year at this old stadium
I took my littel cousin to see the season opener.

Getting off the Arsenal tube station,
we are surrouned by men in maroon/red jerseys
makeshift stands flaunt their ware of scarves and shirts and memorabilia

The neighborhood of Highbury, which really is just a quiet neighborhood really turns into a small orgy for football fanatics.
It was lower scale than the AC Milan vs. AS Roma at the Olympico in Rome , but lively nonetheless.

The atmosphere at Highbury was enthusiastic yet somewhat reserved.
Loud yet not too loud.
Maybe because its in such a quaint neighborhood. The stands were loud but a bit reserved, yes homely even.

Thierri Henri scored on a penalty at the 80th minute and Van Persie on a proper goal at the 86th. But otherwise until the 80th odd minute the game moved little.

Except when this man streaked onto the pitch...

  • 60th anniversary of Japan's surrender

of course all is not forgotten
but took note of a small article in the London Times

Japan 'apologises' again

"Humbly accepting this fact of history, we again express our deep remorse and heartfelt apology and offer our condolences to the victims of the war at home and abroad," said Mr Koizumi, using the expression "owabi" for apology, rather than "shazai", which suggests unambiguous shame.

and another

Old war wounds still fester on VJ Day
a Commonwealth prisoner of war was quoted as saying,
“I can accept the fact that the young generation of Japanese is not to blame. It was their fathers and grandfathers. But until they own up, they’ll always be a pariah nation,”

The articles are illustrative of the fact that the war involving Japan was, of course, not only fought in Asia
